Dear Friends, November 2020
As we prepare for the holiday season, we often get swept away with preparation for celebration with family and friends. I’m here to remind you to take care of yourself as well. This year, we face the probability of yet more covid lockdowns but let’s hope that it is not as drastic as last spring.
As I sit in my office with the scent of my new batch of Male Endocrine Support, I am reminded of a client who received an elevated PSA test just before the lockdown started. He contacted me as he preferred to do things holistically. He was in his 60’s and had never had an elevated PSA test before, so of course this caused him concern.
I asked if he’d had trouble urinating or frequent urination. The answer was no. Difficulty starting or stopping urination? No. Blood in semen? No. Have you recently had sex? Yes; the day prior to his test was he and his wife’s anniversary. Ah Ha! I explained that although a healthy sex life is good for the prostate, having sex 48 hours before testing can cause an elevated PSA test.
He was scheduled for another test in two weeks. He abstained from sex (no ejaculation) and to be on the safe side, he started taking my Male Endocrine Support. His next test was normal. As luck would have it, he got the results just before the lockdown.
I’m not sure why this information is not normally discussed in preparation for your PSA test but for some reason, is overlooked. Some other things that can give you an elevated PSA test is heavy work-outs, bicycle riding, motorcycle riding or horseback riding 24 hours prior to the test. But of all these, ejaculation 48 hours before the test seems to be the worst offender.
About the Prostate:
The healthy prostate gland is about the size of a walnut. It wraps around the base of the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder through the penis. It is when the prostate enlarges that causes difficulty in urination. It is partly muscular and partly glandular and it is driven by testosterone. It secretes an alkaline fluid that adds bulk to the semen. The prostate also filters and removes toxins for protection of the sperm, which enhances the chance of impregnation.
There are ways to prevent and/or reverse prostate enlargement. One we already discussed: a healthy sex life. Use it or loose it!
Diet and life style is very important. If you smoke, do everything you can do to stop smoking. Toxins are very detrimental to your prostate. Zinc is important; it inhibits the enzyme that fosters prostate enlargement. Omaga 3 fatty acids derived from fish or flax seed, also decreases inflammation. Tomatoes are very high in lycopene, an antioxidant similar to betacarotene but much more available to the prostate. It is best when taken in the form of tomato sauce, tomato paste or organic catsup.

Here is a list of the herbs and their function in my Male Endocrine Support:
