Stay Healthy with Baking Soda – Jan, 2023

Baking soda to alkalize 

I remember as a child, my Dad would take baking soda in a glass of water when he had heartburn. There was a lot more common sense back then. Did you know that baking soda AKA sodium bicarbonate, is an antacid? In fact, it is the very same antacid used in Alka-Seltzer.  Because Baking soda helps to alkalize the body there are many health advantages, including oxygenation of cells and proper PH. It works just as well as (if not better than) Tums or other over the counter heartburn relief. More importantly, it doesn’t have the nasty side effects that you can get with Prilosec or Nexium. (severe stomach pain, diarrhea, stool that is watery or bloody). OK enough of that!

Baking soda helps to alkalize the body. Since most of us tend to be on the acidic side, it is highly beneficial to raise your PH level. A higher PH level reduces inflammation. After two weeks of drinking daily 1 teaspoon baking soda in a glass of water, the immune system will reverse an inflammatory response, to an anti-inflammatory response. This can help reduce arthritis symptoms. Another benefit is that it helps prevent kidney disease in the form of kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and renal failure.

Competitive athletes can use baking soda as a cheap and legal supplement to enhance performance. During high intensity exercise, muscle cells produce lactic acid, which is responsible for that ‘burn’ and fatigue in muscles. Baking soda helps to neutralize that response.

The use of baking soda can treat a yeast infection or oral thrush, in combination with an Anti-Candida diet. For intestinal candida overgrowth, I suggest you start off with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in water and work up to 1 tsp baking soda daily. This will prevent the discomfort of sudden candida die-off, ie Herxheimer reaction.

Baking soda raises your blood oxygen and gets oxygen to the cells, deeper into your body. This is very important; not only is oxygen our main source of energy, but many diseases including cancer, need an anaerobic (low oxygen) environment to grow. 

Lori’s morning routine:

I take it two steps further and I add the juice from 1/4 lemon and a tsp. of powdered stevia. Lemon has citric acid that further helps alkalinity and stevia not only makes it taste better but it also helps prevent Lyme disease. Furthermore, it can lower blood pressure due to a constituent called stevioside, which relaxes the blood vessels.

 

  • On an empty stomach I squeeze the juice from a quarter lemon into a cup.
  • Add 1 tsp baking soda (I like Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda) But, any baking soda will do.
  • 1 tsp Stevia. Fill with water, stir and drink up! 
  • Remember to use baking SODA, not baking powder.

It’s a great way to start your day and a great way to start the new year.

    I was suffering badly from candida in my sinuses (long story) but had brain fog severely, couldn’t think, dizzy and sinuses were completely clogged. I followed Lori’s instructions with the baking soda and after 10 minutes I started getting relief and by 10am, the brain fog was gone. I had a good day for the first time in two months. Lori is amazing!!!
